Woody Herman was noticing the great instrumental capabilities of his
sidemen in the 1980's, but also mentioned the lack of individuality in
their approaches. Things have changed: so many people are looking for
jazz solos to be perfect. Meanwhile the great musicians make music
that is wonderful.
