[JPL] PLAYLIST: "General Eclectic", WCVF/WDVL, 8/3/07

Well, I almost didn't make it onto the airwaves today. Around 11 AM, an
electrician working elsewhere in the building sent a tremendous power surge
through the system that we thought fried our transmitter to a crisp. The
decision was made to go through with the webcast in any event, but during
the noon hour, our hard-working tech crew got us back on the air. So we were
heard both locally and via the webcast after all.

Once we did get on the air, it was the phone lines that were burning! The
two most popular tracks of the day were a total contrast -  Julien Kaspar's
blues-guitar-and-B3 instrumental and Jerry Lawson/Talk of the Town's
gospel-soul accappella version of the old Kenny Rogers/Dolly Parton hit.
It's good to hear Jerry Lawson - long-time lead of the acappella masters,
the Persuasions - back with a dynamite new group and a first-rate CD. I'll
be playing this one again! Other callers enjoyed the Punjabi-flavored track
by Galitcha, Tad Britton's piano-trio jazz, Wil Maring's song based on an
old French-Canadian fiddle tune, the smooth-jazz of Phaze II (as long as
smooth-jazz keeps the phones ringing, I'll keep playing a track or two per
show, personal misgivings aside; no one else around here seems to want to
curry that particular sizable segment of the listening audience, so I guess
I'm it; actually, I prefer Novecento's approach to the sub-genre), and Drew
Pilgrim's near-acappella original. I also want to put in a plug for Erik
Balkey's Barry Bonds-connected commentary on sports heroism. To the list:
