Wow Jae,
Who would have guessed. When I saw Kevin open for John McLaughlin's 4th
Dimension band in SF just recently, he came out alone (before his band
played) and answered questions from the audience for about 30 minutes. I
asked him about 'fusion' and his answer was pretty long in the tooth, but a
most interesting viewpoint that I'd not heard before. He made a lot of sense
to me at the time, even though his response eventually wondered off topic.
His attitude and demeanor during the pre-concert talk was extremely positive
and he sure seemed like an articulate, warm hearted, sensible, and
respectful individual that is very serious about 'good music' and jazz,
along with it's rich history. His playing afterward put a real exclamation
point on what he was saying earlier about being influenced at the right age
by the 'music of the day'.
There's no question, Jae, you got short changed at your gig, however,
applying the benefit of doubt, the incident may have had nothing at all to
do with you - it could have been just a bad day and you were in the wrong
place at the wrong time and Kevin wasn't on his best behavior. The fact that
his music was so 'out' that people left, might help support the notion that
it was just a bad day. I display a lot of bad behavior here, but that's more
frustration than real anger, and it's certainly no excuse.
I've been a fan of Kevin's for a while and really think his 'World Trio' Cd
with Dave Holland and Minu Cinelu is an acoustic gem that's unfortunately,
now out of print.
On another note (for Bradley), the reason I asked about the clip being
fusion or not is really just fishing on my part for the viewpoints of the
mainstream jazz professionals here. The genre definition game is still being
played by corporate America whether we like it or not. (I mean that to find
fusion - even at Amazon.com - you still have to enter the Jazz section
first). So, I was just curious.
Thank you gentlemen,
Rick Calic
