You may want to consider Rendezvous with Kenton, recorded in studio  setting 
(that is, a controlled environment) but at the famous Rednezvous  Ballroom, 
which he owned at the time and which served as his home base when he  wasn't on 
the road. Marty Paich's symphonic arrangement of "My Old Flame," with  the 
haunting French horns and moaning saxophone chorus towards the end, is  worth the 
price of the CD, which is widely available.
 
If you're in the mood for ballads, they don't get much better than  
"Rendezvous at Sunset." 
 
The album also includes a seminal version of "The Big Chase."
