Now that we've lost Cecil Payne it leaves us with only NEA Jazz Master James
Moody as the sole survivor of the landmark Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra with
Chano Pozo, Cubano Be-Cubano Bop, Manteca, Tin Tin Deo etc. In October of
1948 Moody, Cecil and other Diz band mates went into the studio and recorded
James' debut as a leader, the obscure James Moody & The Modernaires 10inch
LP. Cecil wrote a song for his fellow C P-Chano Pozo, Cu-Ba which Payne
re-recorded in 1993 for his Cerupa date on Delmark. Just 5 weeks after this
session Chano was shot dead in a Harlem Bar over a dispute about a dime bag
of grass-manteca in Cuban street slang. I prize my 10" copy of this Blue
Note date dedicated and signed by Moody in his inmitable manner. I also
wanted to get Cecil Payne to autograph it as well and now I'll never have
the chance. Cu-Ba and Tin Tin Deo appear on the Blue Note compilation Roots
of Afro Cuban jazz, other than that the album has never been re-issued.

I hope we will have Moody around for many years to come as he still owes me
many kisses......

Arturo
